How to Choose the Right Size for Ski Equipment
Choosing the correct size is essential for comfort, performance, and safety on the slopes. This detailed guide will help you select the right equipment for both children and adults.
1. Skis
The ski length depends on your height, weight, and skill level.
- Beginners: choose skis that are 15–20 cm shorter than your height.
- Intermediate: skis 10–15 cm shorter than your height.
- Advanced: skis 5–10 cm shorter or even equal to your height, for better stability at high speed.
Adult Size Chart
| Height (cm) | Recommended ski length (cm) |
|---|---|
| 150–160 | 140–150 |
| 160–170 | 150–160 |
| 170–180 | 160–170 |
| 180–190 | 170–180 |
| 190+ | 180–190 |
Kids Size Chart
| Age | Height (cm) | Recommended ski length (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| 4–5 years | 100–115 | 80–95 |
| 6–7 years | 115–125 | 95–105 |
| 8–9 years | 125–135 | 105–115 |
| 10–11 years | 135–145 | 115–125 |
| 12–13 years | 145–155 | 125–135 |
2. Ski Boots (Clamps)
Ski boots are sized in the Mondopoint system, which corresponds to the foot length in centimeters.
- Measure your foot length (heel to the tip of your big toe).
- Add 0.5 cm for comfort.
- Select the matching Mondopoint size.
Adult Ski Boots Size Chart
| EU Size | Mondopoint (cm) |
|---|---|
| 38 | 24.0 |
| 39 | 24.5 |
| 40 | 25.0 |
| 41 | 26.0 |
| 42 | 26.5 |
| 43 | 27.5 |
| 44 | 28.0 |
| 45 | 29.0 |
Tip: Boots should feel snug but not painful. They may feel stiff at first but will adjust to your foot shape.
3. Ski Goggles
Choosing goggles is more about fit with the helmet and face than about a standard size.
- Adults: choose standard sizes, compatible with your helmet.
- Kids: smaller frames are available for ages 4–12.
Check for: UV protection, anti-fog coating, and lens type (sunny weather, cloudy weather, or all-round use).
4. Ski Poles
The pole length depends on your height. A simple test: hold the pole upside down with the grip on the floor and your hand under the basket – your elbow should form a 90° angle.
Size Chart
| Height (cm) | Pole length (cm) |
|---|---|
| 150 | 105 |
| 160 | 110 |
| 170 | 115 |
| 180 | 120 |
| 190 | 125 |
Final Recommendations
- Always check the manufacturer’s size guide – there may be slight differences between brands.
- Try the equipment before buying, if possible.
- For kids, choose equipment slightly smaller, never too large "for next year" – safety comes first.
- Invest in good boots – they affect comfort and performance the most.
